An oddly fascinating bloke with prominent bony cheeks and rawboned figure, Peter William (Pete) Postlethwaite was born on February 16, 1946 and was a distinguished character actor on stage, TV and film. Growing up the youngest of four siblings in a Catholic family in Warrington, Lancashire (near Liverpool) in middle-class surroundings to working-class parents, he attended St Mary's University (London). However, while completing his studies, he developed an interest in theatre, to the chagrin of his father, who wanted his children to find secure positions in life.
A drama teacher initially at a Catholic girls convent school, he decided to follow his acting instincts full-time and gradually built up an impressive array of classical stage credits via repertory, including the Bristol Old Vic Drama School, and in stints with Liverpool Everyman, Manchester Royal Exchange and the Royal Shakespeare Company. By the 1980s he was ready to branch out into film and TV, giving a startling performance as a wife abuser in the Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988).
By 1993 he had crossed over into Hollywood parts and earned his first Oscar nomination for his superb role as Daniel Day-Lewis' father in In the Name of the Father (1993). Other quality roles came his way with The Usual Suspects (1995), Brassed Off (1996), and Amistad (1997). He did fine work on television in Sharpe's Company (1994), Lost for Words (1999), and The Sins (2000). Postlethwaite worked equally both in the UK and abroad, and avoided the public limelight for the most part, except for occasional displays of political activism.
Postlethwaite lived quietly out of the spotlight in England and continued on in films with roles in The Shipping News (2001), The Limit (2004), Dark Water (2005), The Omen (2006), Ghost Son (2007) and Solomon Kane (2009). In 2010, he was seen in Clash of the Titans (2010), Inception (2010) and The Town (2010).
Postlewaite died on January 2, 2011, at age 64, of pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and son, and by his daughter from a prior relationship.- Actress

Britain's most iconic and prolific composer of music for TV action/adventure in the 1950's and 60's was born in Cheshire, the son of a builder. He dropped out of school to work for a gas oven manufacturer at the tender age of fourteen. Music was in his blood and jazz was a particularly strong influence. Equally adept at playing and at composing/arranging, Edwin Astley began playing clarinet and saxophone for the Royal Army Service Corps while in his teens. After World War II, he joined a dance band, before long, fronting his own orchestra. Some time later, he moved to London to join a prominent music publishing firm as arranger for singers Vera Lynn and Ann Shelton. By 1953, Astley had also started in the film business (hired by the ever budget-conscious Danziger brothers), initially as a writer of incidental music.
Popularly, he first attracted attention with his nine-note fanfare introducing The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955) (though the actual theme song was written by American Carl Sigman). This inaugurated Astley's advancement to composer of scores for A-grade feature films (The Mouse That Roared (1959), The Day They Robbed the Bank of England (1960), The Phantom of the Opera (1962), etc.), always preferring to work freelance, never under contract. In between writing operatic pieces and music for son et lumière performances, Astley tended to reserve his best work for television, beginning with the classic jazzy harpsichord theme for Danger Man (1960). This was followed by similarly evocative, syncopated themes for The Saint (1962), The Baron (1966), The Champions (1968) and Department S (1969) -- instantly recognizable music which all but defined television in the swinging sixties.
Britain's film industry declined in the decade which followed and Astley retired to Goring-on-Thames, a village in Oxfordshire. There, he spent his remaining years growing vegetables, building a summer house and a recording studio in his garage, boating on the Thames, playing golf and travelling. Until his death in 1998, he continued to dabble in composition, working with his son on arrangements of The Who and The Rolling Stones, as well as providing music (commissioned by such employers as Pan Am, BOAC and the British Stock Exchange) for documentaries, travelogues and educational subjects.- Writer

He was born in Warrington but grew up in the Cornish seaside town of Falmouth. Whilst training to be a photo-journalist in the Midlands he co-wrote the stage musical 'Doomsday Genesis' with composer Keith Kerslake. He then moved to London where he worked as a personal assistant to the movie mogul Robert Stigwood ('Tommy', 'Saturday Night Fever' and 'Grease').
In 1976, with drummer Jon Moss, bassist Steve Voice and guitarist Dave Wight, Miles formed the new wave band 'London' with himself as lead singer and chief songwriter. He also briefly adopted the name Riff Regan, (Riff from the character in West Side Story and Regan from John Thaw's character in The Sweeney). The band soon came to the notice of ex-Yardbirds and ex-Marc Bolan manager Simon Napier-Bell who secured them a record deal with MCA Records and a nationwide tour supporting The Stranglers throughout the summer of 1977. Their singles 'Everyone's A Winner', 'Summer Of Love' and 'Animal Games' and their one and only album 'Animal Games' were all produced by Napier-Bell at the IBC studios in London where The Who and The Kinks had recorded so many of their classics.
Following a nationwide headlining tour 'London' broke up after a farewell gig at the Marquee Club in Wardour Street. Jon Moss joined The Damned and then formed Culture Club with Boy George; Colin Wight became a Lecturer in International Politics; Steve Voice formed The Original Vampires; Simon Napier-Bell went on to manage George Michael and Wham! and Miles was retained as a solo artist by MCA Records releasing four more singles 'All The Nice Boys And Girls In The World', 'Japanese Girls', 'You Call Me Lucky' and 'The Only One' before recording his final record 'Hard Hearts Don't Cry' on CBS Epic in 1981.
In 1982 Miles co-wrote the song 'Hottest Woman In Town' with Andy Miller. Recorded at London's Trident recording studios by ex-Ozzy Osbourne and Ian Gillan lead guitarist Berni Torme, it was released as a single and featured on the 'Metal Killers' album.
In the mid-80s Miles started writing comedy scripts. His first play 'Because Of Mr Darrow' was produced at the Finborough Theatre in London and this was followed by 'Laugh? I Nearly Went To Miami!' which had a successful London fringe run before being produced for the first Liverpool Festival of Comedy.
Translated into many languages, 'Laugh? I Nearly Went To Miami!' has been performed all around the world including Vienna where as '...Und Morgen Fliegen Wir Nach Miami' it became one of the city's most popular stage plays.
By this time Miles was writing stage and television material for the comic Frankie Howerd including the hour long special, 'Superfrank', for Channel 4. He also wrote an updated stage version of 'Up Pompeii!'
Miles was also writing for the international Walt Disney Magazine creating cartoon stories for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and other well known Disney characters.
He then went on to create and write the BBC1 comedy series 'Wyatt's Watchdogs'. Produced and directed by Alan J.W. Bell, it starred Brian Wilde (from 'Porridge' and 'Last of the Summer Wine') and Trevor Bannister (Are You Being Served?) This led to an invitation to write for the Alomo/BBC TV hit show 'Birds Of A Feather'.
His next stage comedy was 'It's Now Or Never!' Directed by Marina Calderone, it starred Tony Roper (from BBC TV's Rab C.Nesbitt), Peter Polycarpou (Birds of a Feather and Miss Saigon), Heather Alexander and Leyton Sommers as Elvis Presley.
This was followed by 'Getting Away With Murder', directed by Stephen Warden, which had a successful run in Hampstead, London.
Miles' theatrical comedy 'Topless' is a one-woman play set on an open-top London sightseeing bus. Following director Martin Bailey's original production in 1999, 'Topless' returned to the West End of London for a second season the following year. Produced by The Big Bus Company and directed by the author, this unique theatrical piece was performed on top of a sightseeing bus driving through the streets of London. This was followed by the publication of his first novel 'Fripp'.
In 2008, Matador Books published his stage thriller 'Twist' and 'Topless in Philadelphia'.
He has also reformed 'London' with bass player Steve Voice and they will be playing gigs throughout 2008. - Director
